"Daphne, where is the syringe?" shouted the doctor, shaking her out of the morbidity. Sighing she went to get one. "You should do what gives you happiness" read the signboard. Since childhood she had always been told that she had healing hands and she loved her profession. She dreamt of heading a nursing department and healing people. Her desire was to work in a big hospital with the famous surgeons, help in big surgeries. Tonight, after the doctor's departure, she would browse the net for jobs in LA. Maybe that would solve part of the problem.
She applied for a dozen jobs, but all the coveted ones needed better qualifications. She typed nursing schools in the search panel and came across many sites with regular courses. Then she hit upon a bachelor's degree in healthcare services from Jacksonville University Was this possible? She searched further and found that this is what she was looking for. "I must tell Andy. No, let this be a surprise." And she was in school without anyone knowing.
Suddenly the tiredness, the frustration, the depression had disappeared. Everyone was commenting on her buoyant mood. She would spend all her spare time on books. Andy would call regularly from LA and would be greeted by a happy voice. Daphne even went for a weekend there to check out the hospitals she could apply at. Much to the doctor's distress! Andy was quite amazed at this change, but she kept saying it was a secret. Wading through text books again was a tough job, she had forgotten that learning needed a lot of concentration, much more than handling this small hospital with its fussy doctor and irritable patients. But how to get leave for the exams? Suppose there was an emergency? She needed help. Making Carla promise to keep her secret, she asked for advice and help in this difficult situation. Shocked Carla thought the cause of happiness had been another man, but agreed after much persuasion.
Daphne prayed fervently to pass the exams and get to Andy and her dream hospital. She pretended viral fever, distressing the doctor further with her behavior and sudden illness. "Stay in the hospital. We'll be able to look after you better." But stressing the comfort of home, Daphne took her exams. And on the d-day, she had made it-she had got her degree in healthcare services.
Excited, she called Andy asking him to fix the date for the wedding and to send her new CV to the hospitals in LA. Andy and her parents and Carla jumped with joy at this secret. The doctor grumpingly wished her luck. But Daphne looks at her Jacksonville University Degree every morning before going to work, thanking it for healing her life.
Today, she is heading the nursing department in the largest hospital in LA and is a leading speaker in most forums persuading people to reach for their dreams through courses from nursing schools.
